The Cymbidium Orchid Club of South Australia (COCSA) was formed in June 1988 to promote interest in and knowledge of cymbidium orchids, hold regular functions to showcase the outstanding features of cymbidium orchids and liaise Nationally and Internationally with organisations to keep up to date with the latest trends.
The Club encourages the development of new varieties, and plants are displayed and judged at monthly meetings and annual shows. We conduct a Winter Show in early July and a Spring Show in late August each year. Both shows are conducted over a whole week, in major shopping centres, where thousands of visitors see our plants. We have conducted National Shows on a number of occasions, where the very best cymbidiums in the world are displayed, many for the first time. We get growers from around Australia and overseas, coming here especially to see these shows. They are spectacular. South Australian growers have produced many of the great cymbidiums, which are grown in large numbers around the world.
We hold general meetings on the fourth Wednesday each month, February to November, at the Burnside Community Centre, 401 Greenhill Rd, Tusmore, SA.
We show photos of many of the plants from meetings and shows on our “Cymbidium Orchid Club of South Australia” Facebook site. Thousands of enthusiasts from around the world visit our site regularly. The Web Site offers great advice and has photos of plants displayed over the years.
Visitors are most welcome at our meetings and show and we offer lots of advice to help anybody to grow some very rewarding plants.
The doors open at 7 pm and the beginners' class (all welcome!) starts at 7:15 with the meeting proper starting at 8pm.
The beginners' class introduces those who are new to the club to various aspects of propagating and cultivating cymbidiums. Information is provided relating to a range of topics from the practical- repotting, potting mediums and fertilising regimes- to the academic- cloning and diploids, tetraploid and triploids.
During the extensive flowering season growers compete in the monthly club competition, which is judged by our panel of judges. Winning plants are announced and displayed at the end of the meeting.
Monthly raffles and door prizes as well as a trading table selling pots, fertilizers etc and an occasional plant trading table provide the opportunity to extend members' plant collections.
Guest speakers, often from interstate, inform members about current trends in cymbidium cultivation and propagation.
Practical workshops on repotting, decanting from flasks. etc are always popular.
